It’s not exactly the most normal time to be searching for graduate jobs or trying to get into one or other internship or one of the graduate scheme that companies offer. With finals just weeks away, most of your contemporaries will probably be adopting the attitude that thinking about the future is best left until after exams finish. That means many will postpone looking for two or three months (what with post-finals celebrations), which effectively means they will be well into the holidays before they start looking properly. By which time, it’s likely to be too late.

With a little preparation and forward planning, this is somewhere you could get ahead. Finals are crucial, but life goes on afterwards – it’s just hard to remember that fact in the throes of exam revision. However, when you get to the end of them the rest of life is going to greet you. You could spend the next stage doing something interesting that will set you up in your future career. On the other hand, you might end up spending the next three months killing time in a series of menial jobs you only do for the money – perhaps all for the sake of spending an hour or two in the Careers centre or on the web checking out which companies are offering positions you might like to try.

There’s plenty out there. Graduate jobs aren’t particularly easy to come by at the moment, thanks to the economy, but there are still lots of opportunities. Internships are comparatively common, and offer a good way to get to know a bit about a company, what they do and how they treat their workers, without you signing your soul away to them for the long term. (The other side of this is that they typically don’t pay so well. In practice, you will probably have to balance your interest in the company and desire for experience with the financial realities of life after studenthood.)

The moral is: act soon. It’s never too early to start looking for graduate jobs or other options like graduate scheme. Even if you’re not searching for something that permanent – perhaps you’re not even a finalist – then an internship can get you a foot in the door and allow you to gain valuable experience and contacts. Given the job market at the moment, a search at this stage – when many of your contemporaries won’t be able to take their eyes off exams – could surely pay huge dividends in the long run.

If you are nearly at the end of your school career and have an interest in finding work that involves helping people in your local community, then social work jobs could well be for you. If you are wondering how to get a career in social services jobs, the following article should help you get started. In general terms, social worker jobs involve helping and advising people who are facing issues in their lives.

Clearly there are any number of difficulties people might go through, and as a result, social work jobs can provide many different challenges. The people you work with might need your help for all sorts of reasons, from long term illness to families under pressure. Your job would involve helping people to take steps to become more independent and improve their lives, making the best possible use of the welfare system. You might be called upon to help children and parents, older people, those with physical or learning disabilities or mental health problems, homeless people, or people with drug or alcohol issues. A social worker would not generally work with all these types of people at once, though. You would tend to specialise in one area.

Within this area, typical tasks might be to assess and review a service user’s situation, offer them information, counselling and advocacy, and taking part in team meetings, supervision and case conferences. It is often necessary to liaise with other agencies such as healthcare and housing authorities, and sometimes giving evidence in court.

Social services jobs can be demanding, and as such require a specific type of person. Good social workers generally possess very good communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds and gain their trust, a practical and flexible approach to work, and empathy in dealing with people. To become a social worker you will need an honours degree or postgraduate degree in social work. To get onto one of these courses you will probably require five GCSEs and at least two A levels.

If you think you have the personality and skills required for social worker jobs, then the next logical step is to start researching undergraduate courses and checking the admissions requirements. However, if you are unsure about applying for a course, you could try chatting to people in social work jobs for an insight. As with most things, the best way to decide whether social services jobs might be right for you is to chat to somebody who does this kind of work.

I spent most of my time at university having fun and studying, devoting very little time to graduate jobs. It was only really in May of my final year that my thoughts turned seriously to what I was going to do after my degree. I had studied History, which is one of the least vocational degrees, and I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. I could tell my mum and dad were a little anxious about what was to become of me. My father had joined the graduate scheme of a big company as soon as he finished university, and I thought he rather felt that this would be a good idea for me. I couldn’t seem to be able to muster any interest in the corporate world, and was really quite keen to get a job in the media sector. All the advice I heard about getting into media was to try to land internship jobs, and use those as a stepping stone.

If I was to do some internship jobs, this was to mean one thing for sure – I wouldn’t be earning much money for a few months. But I knew that it was really important to spend some time looking for a job I would genuinely enjoy. So I sent my CV off to a few companies that looked interesting, asking whether I could come in and do some unpaid work for them. My local newspaper got back to me and invited me in the following week, which was fabulous. I got on so well with the team there that I ended up getting really involved and staying for two months. They really made me feel welcome, and I wrote lots of articles for publication, including a front page headline.

I really loved the experience but the editor said he wouldn’t be able to give me a job there unless I took a journalism course, which I wasn’t too sure about. I had just completed a Masters course and was keen to find a job rather than do more studying. So I wrote off to some more companies while I was there, and was fortunate enough to find a local newspaper which was advertising for a junior staff member, and was willing to pay me to train. I was over the moon and have now been working atthis paper for six months.

I don’t often look with jealousy at my friends who went down the graduate scheme route. I know that with so many graduate jobs around, you have to think carefully before you settle for something, and for me, doing internship jobs was the best way to do this.
